Juan Mata: Manchester United sign Chelsea midfielder for £37.1m

Manchester United's new record signing Juan Mata (right) with manager David Moyes

Juan Mata has completed his £37.1m move from Chelsea to Manchester United in a record transfer deal for the reigning Premier League champions.

The Spain midfielder had a medical on Saturday and has signed a contract, understood to run until summer 2018.

Mata, 25, is likely to make his debut at home against Cardiff on Tuesday.

“The time has come for a new challenge,” he said. “I am excited at the chance I have to be part of the next phase in the club’s history.”

He added: “Chelsea is a top club and I have many friends there but you cannot turn down the chance to join Manchester United. I look forward to helping the manager and the team be successful in the coming years.”

Mata, capped 32 times by Spain, will be unveiled at a news conference on Monday at 13:30 GMT.

He becomes manager David Moyes’s second high-profile signing, following the arrival in September of Everton’s Marouane Fellaini for £27.5m.

The deal also eclipses United’s previous record signing – Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham in 2008 – by £6.35m.

Mata, who joined Chelsea from Valencia for £23.5m in August 2011, has been

Chelsea’s player of the year in both full seasons he was at Stamford Bridge.

He scored 32 goals for the Blues and made more than 130 appearances but has failed to command a regular starting place under Jose Mourinho, who returned to Chelsea last summer for a second spell as manager.

“Juan is one of the finest playmakers in the game today and it’s a real pleasure to have secured his signature,” said Moyes.

“He’s been instrumental in Chelsea’s recent success, with a notable 28 assists and 32 goals in his last two Premier League seasons.

“I have been impressed with the excitement he has shown to be part of the new Manchester United.

“I know our fans have admired Juan for some time now – he has always played well against us – and I know they will be delighted to see him in the red of United, starting on Tuesday.”

Mata posted a letter on his official website  thanking Chelsea fans for their support since moving to Stamford Bridge two years and five months ago.

He said there had been many highlights, including winning theChampions League in May 2012, but added: “On the other hand, I have experienced some complicated situations from a personal point of view, mainly during the last six months.

“Before last summer, my intention was to stay here for a long time; as long as the club wanted me to, and to keep winning trophies for Chelsea.

“However, as you all know, things changed after the pre-season.

“From feeling like an important player, I started to experience some difficult situations and I felt unable to help the team to the extent that I wanted and was used to.

“Obviously, I fully respect the circumstances.”

Mata goes on to praise all the managers he served under at the club – Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Rafael Benitez and Mourinho.

“Lastly, I want to thank the club, and in particular its owner, Roman Abramovich, for trusting me and making an important investment when signing me,” he adds.

“Also for their understanding regarding my situation over the last months.

“I’m very glad to have been part of the squad that made his and our dream come true: winning the Champions League on that unforgettable night in Munich.

“Although many of you, like myself, never thought this moment would come, this is football and a new chapter is about to begin.

“I will never forget my time in Chelsea and the affection I take with me, I will keep forever.”

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND — In the end, Cristiano Ronaldo showed it did matter to him. If, hours before the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich, the Real Madrid and Portugal striker looked uninterested and promised life would go on if he failed to break Lionel Messi’s grip on the coveted trophy, the 28-year-old was clearly overwhelmed when his name was finally announced by Pele at the Kongresshaus in Zurich on Monday night.

Five years after his last win, Ronaldo has been officially recognised as the best footballer on the planet, at least until January 2015.

Tears flooded his eyes and cheeks as he received a prize that, specifically in 2013, seemed to have acquired a particular importance. Eclipsed by Lionel Messi’s spectacular exploits in the last four years, even though his own numbers were hardly dismissible, Ronaldo last year maintained a stunning regularity that injury finally denied to his great rival. The problem is that not everybody agreed.

Among the unconvinced was FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who went further than his clumsy usual ways to personally criticize Ronaldo during an event in England in October. While comparing Messi to the son everybody would like to have, the Swiss’ reference to Ronaldo having “more expenses for the hairdresser,” among other things, stung the Portuguese.

Ronaldo, in the last few years, has felt his exploits have been overlooked by peers, the media and company. Whether or not one could question if he was right, it also was naïve to assume he had no point at all when thinking footballing matters were not the only reason why he kept coming short of another Ballon d’Or.

Before you think this is prima donna behaviour, just think of how Pele, after everything he has seen and done in football, still wept when receiving his honorary trophy on Monday. It means a lot.

It was a tough year for Ronaldo, during which Real Madrid once again fell short of that ever elusive 10th European Cup, outplayed by Borussia Dortmund in the last four.

Once again, he would not win the honours that, alongside a humongous pay package, had lured him away from Manchester United in the summer of 2009 (ironically, after he won one Champions League and made it to a second final with the English outfit).

To make matters worse, Portugal faltered during the European qualifiers and missed out on automatic qualification to the World Cup, and then, in the playoffs, were paired with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Sweden.

Ronaldo’s wondrous display over two legs — scoring all four of Portugal’s goals — was the difference. Regarding the Ballon d’Or, it could have come too late, had FIFA not changed the voting deadline, officially because of the fact that less than 50 percent of the 500-plus voters had cast their ballots by the original Nov. 15 cutoff date.

Cue accusations that FIFA was trying to make amendments for Blatter’s less-than-appropriate comments by giving Ronaldo a helping hand. Bayern Munich saw a conspiracy against fellow nominee Franck Ribery, for instance. It all made for an uneasy buildup to the Zurich gala, and Ronaldo could be excused for feeling a bit edgy.

We tend to forget that these players are also human and have feelings. In his pursuit of excellence, Ronaldo wants kudos, even if a golden trophy is how it is represented.

His is a life of sacrifices, regardless of how much money comes into his bank account, and to see Ronaldo weeping and looking less than cool while trying to thank people for winning that trophy will perhaps shed new light on a player that a good number of people love to loathe.

Ronaldo scored 69 goals in 59 matches in 2013. This should not be forgotten when trying to analyze the Ballon results. It was an interesting year, and some people rightly pointed to the recognition of a team player, in the form of Ribery.

But when even FIFA’s description of the Ballon d’Or praises individual efforts, it is safe to say Ronaldo is hardly a bad fit for the part.

Now let’s see what happens when Messi recovers his best form and whether his spiky-haired Brazilian teammate, Neymar, can also step up to the challenge laid down by Ronaldo.

GUNDOGAN RACE HEATS UP

Galatasaray-v-FC-Copenhagen-Wesley-Sneijder_3023589Manchester United face serious competition for Ilkay Gundogan according to the Daily Mail, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Arsenal all joining the race for the midfielder.

The Borussia Dortmund star is thought to be at the top of David Moyes’ list of targets to improve United’s midfield, but the Mail report: ‘Gundogan’s father has already met with members of the Barcelona board as the Catalan giants try to steal a march on their rivals for the 23-year-old’s signature.

‘Gundogan’s contract with Dortmund expires at the end of the 2015 season while his relatively modest £25,000-a-week salary certainly leaves him open to a tempting offer from either the Premier League or La Liga.’

Meanwhile, Real Madrid apparently see Gundogan as the natural successor to Xabi Alonso, who has been linked with Juventus.

UNITED ALSO CHASING SNEIJDER
The story that refuses to die has raised its head again. This time it’s the Guardian who link Wesley Sneijder with a move to Old Trafford, claiming that David Moyes is considering a January move for the midfielder to boost United’s ailing title hopes.

‘With the champions 13 points behind the leaders, Arsenal, and seven from a Champions League berth there is a renewed urgency to bolster the squad particularly in midfield,’ report the Guardian.

‘Sneijder came close to signing for United two seasons ago before the deal fell through because of contractual issues and. The Dutchman, who reportedly has release clause of around £13m, would represent a bargain.’

Moyes said at the weekend that he will not be forced into the transfer market, but it already seems that United have plenty of targets in mind to try and rescue their season.

ARSENAL SCOUTING DUTCH YOUNGSTER
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal sent scouts to watch Ajax youngster Davy Klaassen on Saturday and left suitably impressed after the midfielder bagged a hat-trick against NAC Breda.

The 20-year-old has scored six times in ten matches so far this season and is being tipped as an outside bet to make Holland’s World Cup squad.

‘Although he plays in Ajax’s midfield, he is capable of playing centre forward and has drawn comparisons with a young Dennis Bergkamp for his ability to create and score,’ claim the Mail.

‘Coach Frank de Boer said: “Davy is an attacking midfielder who can play centre forward. He’s definitely very talented. Moreover, he’s a smart guy.”‘
